26 Feb, 2026 Men Have Pelvic Floors Too! Why Men Should Care
When it comes to pelvic floor health, men often get overlooked. But here’s the thing: men have pelvic floors too! The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues that support the bladder, rectum, and other organs in the pelvis. And just like women, men can experience pelvic floor issues.
What is the Male Pelvic Floor?
The male pelvic floor is a complex system of muscles, ligaments, and tissues that support the bladder, rectum, and prostate gland. It helps with:
- Urinary control: storing and releasing urine
- Bowel movements: controlling bowel movements and preventing incontinence
- Sexual function: erection, ejaculation, and orgasm
- Core stability: supporting the core and maintaining posture
Common Pelvic Floor Issues in Men
- Urinary Incontinence: Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, or exercising, often due to weakened pelvic floor muscles.
- Erectile Dysfunction: Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, which can be related to pelvic floor muscle tension or weakness.
- Prostate Problems: Enlarged prostate, prostatitis, or prostate cancer can affect pelvic floor function and cause symptoms like urinary frequency or pain.
- Bowel Issues: Constipation, straining, or fecal incontinence, often related to pelvic floor muscle weakness or dyssynergia (uncoordinated muscle contractions).
- Pelvic Pain: Chronic pain in the pelvic area, often related to muscle tension, inflammation, or nerve irritation.
Why Men Should Care
- Quality of Life: Pelvic floor issues can impact daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.
- Sexual Health: Pelvic floor muscles play a role in erection and ejaculation, and strengthening them can improve sexual function.
- Prostate Health: Pelvic floor exercises can help with prostate issues and recovery after surgery.
- Injury Prevention: Strengthening the pelvic floor can help prevent injuries and improve core stability, particularly for athletes or individuals with physically demanding jobs.
- Mental Health: Pelvic floor issues can contribute to anxiety, depression, and decreased self-esteem.
How to Take Care of Your Pelvic Floor
- Do Kegel Exercises: Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles with regular Kegel exercises:
- Contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles 10-15 times, 3-4 times a day
- Focus on slow, deep contractions and quick, short contractions
- Stay Active: Engage in activities that promote core stability, like yoga or Pilates.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight puts pressure on the pelvic floor.
- Practice Good Bowel Habits: Eat a high-fiber diet and avoid straining.
- Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate pelvic floor issues; try relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing.
- Seek Help: If you’re experiencing symptoms, consult a healthcare provider or pelvic floor physical therapist.
Don’t neglect your pelvic floor health, guys! Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you.
