Description
Shoulder separation involves acromioclavicular joint ( AC joint). AC joint is where the collarbone (clavicle) meets the shoulder blade (acromion).

Mechanism of injury
Direct fall on the shoulder joint, which may result is demage to the ligaments.
Direct fall on shoulder can be tear the ligaments completely which causes separation of collarbone and shoulder blade or scapula. Mild shoulder separation can cause sprain to the AC ligament.

If pain persist or deformity is severe surgeon might recommend trimming back the end of collarbone so that it does not rub against acromion. If there is significant deformity with tear to the ligament, then ligament reconstruction surgery is required.
