Osteochondral Dissecans (OCD)

OCD or osteochondral dissecans is a conditions that develops in the joints especially in knee and ankles.

 

OCD develops when a small segment of the bone begins to separate from its surrounding due to lack of blood supply. As a result, the small piece of bone and the cartilage covering it begin to crack & loosen.

Causes

 

  • Exact cause is not known.
  • A repetitive trauma or stress to the bone over time could be a possible cause.

 

Symptoms

 

Pain & Swelling of the joint especially after physical activities like sports. Advance stage OCD can results in locking & clicking of the joint.

 

Diagnosis

 

MRI – MRI is the better investigation to rule out OCD in early stage. It also helps the surgeon to evaluate the extent of damage and planning the best procedures for the same.
